As you read through the following list, notice that "punishment" is never the stated reason for a student's removal from class. This is a CRITICAL factor in enjoying positive outcomes from removing problem students. Learning is the reason for removing a student from class: both the problem student's learning, and their classmates' learning.

Including a tangible "welcome back when..." is the second most important factor for successfully removing a student from class.

  1. A different setting would suit your learning style better. Please go to _________ and return when ___________.
  2. I created this alternate assessment to help you learn better. Please complete it over in ____________'s classroom and return when ________.
  3. Your behavior is causing your classmates to stop learning. I understand what you're doing, and I don't hate you, but for your classmates sake please complete your work in __________'s room. I can't wait to start fresh tomorrow!  Your classmates are distracting you, I think __________'s classroom will provide a better location for you to learn in today.
  4. Today's lesson doesn't seem to be helping you, please go to ___________'s classroom and write a list of how I can serve you better as a teacher. Bring it to me for class tomorrow.
  5. We're not communicating well today. Go to room ________ and write down a list of what we've done in class today and bring it by after school so we can discuss how to make sure our learning environment is as positive as possible tomorrow.
  6. You must be bored by today's assignment because you're so much more advanced than the rest of the class. Take this book and read ahead about the next chapter and take a few notes in __________'s classroom. I'll accept your notes as a substitute for today's assignment.
  7. You don't seem to work well in groups today, it's no big deal, just complete your assignment in ___________'s classroom today. Tomorrow we're working independently, so you'll have more success.
  8. It's my job to make sure everyone can learn. You're stopping people from learning today. Please complete today's assignment ___________ and rejoin our class tomorrow for the wrap up of our unit.
  9. Mr. __________ from last year mentioned how much he misses you. Why don't you visit him while you complete today's assignment and rejoin the class tomorrow.
  10. Can you drop off this work for _________, and then, we'll be so close to the end of class you might as well stay in that classroom to finish your work. I'll see you tomorrow.
  11. Everyone else is following our discussion guidelines. Please take this handout of discussion questions and respond in writing in __________'s classroom. I can't wait to hear from you during our next discussion, but the guidelines have to be followed. Good luck on the questions, #4 is a real doozy.
  12. I noticed your classmates (insert distracted behavior here) when you (insert distracting behavior here). I know it's not a big deal when you (insert distracting behavior here) but if you can finish today's assignment in the library where no one will be distracted by your behavior, I think everyone will be more successful.
  13. Your classmates decided that classes run best when students meet (insert broken expectation here.) Your classmates and I need you to leave today so we can all enjoy the learning environment we deserve. We can't wait to welcome you back tomorrow.
  14. For your classmates’ benefit, I need you to go to ______________ and complete ______________. C'mon back when you feel we can work together positively.
  15. Please bring your materials to ____________ because Mrs. __________ has a great back table where you can spread out your materials and focus better. Don't tell your classmates where I sent you, because it's probably an academic advantage for you to work there.
  16. You know that you're a great addition to any class, but for today, I need you to complete your assignment in ____________ because your behavior is causing your classmates to (insert distracted behavior here.)

Or for those of you who prefer fewer words (or need to veil your rage)

So much of the writing published about education is published by people who don't teach. I figured it was time for a teacher to write about teaching. I've been proud to teach 8th-grade ELA in Dunkirk City Schools since 2007, and to serve at Fredonia State University as an adjunct professor, teaching educational technology since 2017.
