Weebly Video Tutorials

Take a look at these video tutorials before emailing me questions.
Chances are I'll respond with a link to one of them.

Weebly Video Tutorials

Weebly is AMAZING, but it's a complicated and new interface with which students are unfamiliar. By popular demand, this semester, I've added a series of Loom video tutorials explaining how to use Weebly. Some of them are structural how-to guides. Some of them are stylistic recommendations. Some are for beginners, and some are for putting on the finishing touches. Ironically, all of them are made using this section itself as the example, so you're learning how to use Weebly, while I'm making a section teaching you how to use Weebly. It's a bit metacognitive.

Selecting and Starting your Site

This tutorial will take you through the process of selecting and starting your site. Watch it if you need to:
  1. Select a site template.
  2. Know what to look for in a site template.
  3. Pick your site name.
  4. Make sure your site is free.
  5. Name your site.

Page Management - Basic

This tutorial will share how to manage pages. Watch it if you need to:
  1. Add a page
  2. Delete a page
  3. Name a page
  4. Learn the types of pages and why to use them.

Page Management - Advanced

This tutorial will show the advanced page management skills. Watch this if you want to learn:
  1. How to move a page.
  2. How to make a page your homepage.
  3. How to "nest" pages in a hierarchy.

Adding Elements: Basic

Your pages are now built! Use this tutorial to learn how to add elements to them. Watch this if you need to:
  1. Add titles
  2. Add text
  3. Add images
  4. Add sections / structure

Deleting Elements

You will undoubtedly add some elements to your site that you don't want. Watch this tutorial to learn to delete elements.

Predictable Structure

When people scan your site, they need to know what to look for, and where to look for it. Watch this tutorial if you need to:
  1. Review "Adding Elements: Basic"
  2. Add multiple resources in a predictable way.

Adding Hyperlinks

Hyperlinks are the bread and butter of web design. Do them right, and your site is intuitive and easy. Do them wrong, and your site is unmanageable. Watch the following video is you need to know:
  1. How to make words a hyperlink
  2. How to make a button a hyperlink
  3. How to make an image a hyperlink
  4. How to link to external OR internal pages

Making Links look like the Material

I always recommend that when doing web design, an image is a better link than just words. People love clicking on an image. Watch this video if you need to learn how to:
  1. Screen shot a Slides and save it as an image.
  2. Screen shot a Doc and save it as an image
  3. Screen shot ANYTHING you need to link and save it as an image.

Embedding Videos

Embedded videos are viewable THROUGH your website. This is the method I would recommend using when publishing your digital field trip video. That way, you don't incur the load time and additional window caused by following a link to a new page. When someone is looking at your portfolio, you want your video to be surrounded by your content.

Managing Style and Structure

This is a big one! Ten minutes long! This tutorial takes you through the style and structure of web design. Some choices are purely stylistic, other choices need to be made based on effective web design structure. Watch this tutorial if:
  1. You want to know how a website should look
  2. You want to learn how to balance text, images, and titles
  3. You want to see a variety of effective hyperlink techniques
  4. You want to do a final once-over on your own site to make sure it's tip top!

Narrative Voice in Web Design

This tutorial will teach you how to write on your website. Watch it if you want to learn:
  1. What types of text to include
  2. How to target an audience
  3. How a personal teacher website should differ from a "professional" education company
  4. How to balance formal writing with colloquial writing

Scalability and Universality

If I'm honest, this one is a bit of a bird walk. I share how if you do web design well, it should make your life as a teacher easier, and not be "just another thing" you need to update. While you might glean some web design tips, you'll learn more about my teaching philosophy, and why I live in a calm, zen classroom when many of my colleagues feel stressed and underwater.

Turning in Your Website!

You're finally finished! Watch the tutorial to the right to make sure you turn in your website correctly.
